| A
little taster of private charters... Cliff Richard did it to celebrate his birthday. Jane Fonda does it for charity. And hellraising Jack Nicholson does it just to amuse his friends.Yes, all three are members of an exclusive club; those with the cash and panache to charter an entire cruise ship as their personal playground, have everything on board just as they like it - and only share it with people they like enough to invite along as guests. Fortunately for those of us whose income doesn't quite match the level of Bolivia's national debt, you don't have to be a billionaire to afford your own private playground afloat. For example, it's possible to hire a private riverboat - complete with pilot, housekeeper, chef and chauffered mini-van - and spend a week exploring the waterways of France with family and friends from around £10,000 for six people - or £1,666 a head. Better still, persuade your company to charter a ship as a conference venue or incentive prize and you could find yourself luxuriating for free. Conferences and incentives are big business for the world's luxury cruise lines, whose vessels are small and exclusive enough to cater for the most demanding organisers. Modern cruise ships come ready equipped with meeting rooms and extensive conference facilities; many have private dining rooms which can be dedicated specifically to corporate events, and shore excursion staff - used to catering to the every wish of the wealthy and famous - are adept at rustling up some really special experiences ashore. The big benefit for companies is that staff are together in one venue, which makes it easier to keep track of everybody. And corporate messages can be reinforced with tailor-made entertainment, company logos, writing paper and even `winners' suites' with personalised nameplates on the doors. So next time you're seeking a really special conference or incentive venue - or just dreaming of escaping the crowd for some quality time with your loved ones - don't let cruising pass you by. |
